My name is Gemma Harrison. I am a Qualified Integrative Therapist (FDA), registered (MBACP) Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I belong to a professional body called the BACP whose register is accredited by the Professional standards Authority.
TLC Counselling & Psychotherapy provides confidential, professional therapy services for both men and women. Unlike the NHS I have no waiting list and could offer you an appointment within one week. Private Therapy enables you to get the support you need, when you need it.
We all need some emotional support from time to time and we are not always able to turn to loved ones. There are many reasons people seek therapy; anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, anger, loss, bereavement and relationship issues, plus many other challenges we face on a day to day basis. There are no rules as to what you should or should not attend therapy for. You may simply be feeling sad, stuck, overwhelmed or confused. Perhaps you are not sure of why you feel the way you do but know that something feels not quite right. If you feel you need help to process your thoughts, feelings or behaviours then therapy could be for you.
Therapy is a unique experience, it provides you with the opportunity to explore your world and make more sense of your feelings, thoughts and behaviours within a safe, non-judgmental space where you can be who you want to be. It enables you to gain greater awareness and understanding of yourself, thus empowering you to make changes that have a positive impact on your well-being, helping you to restore balance in your life. Whatever you may be finding difficult to manage right now may feel a little easier to bare during the process of therapy.
I am a qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I have an Arts Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and practice according to their code of professional standards, values and ethical guidelines. I am a registered health care provider with Vitality Health Insurance and have professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover. I am also ICO Data Protection Registered.
I specialize in working towards change. I use simple language (no psycho babble). I do not have a magic wand or have all the answers but i do have the ability to work at psychological depth, competent in holding and working with emotions.
I have been working as a therapist for four years. I have worked with a variety of individuals of all ages from diverse backgrounds. I have experience in charity organisations, the voluntary sector and private practice. i have worked at Leicester Women's Counselling Centre supporting vulnerable women and at Coping With Cancer supporting individuals diagnosed with cancer.
During this time some of the issues i have worked with are;
abuse, addiction, anger management, anxiety, bereavement, chronic illness, depression, domestic violence, generalized anxiety disorder(GAD), health anxiety, loneliness, loss, low self-esteem, obsessive compulsive disorder(OCD), relationship issues, separation, stress, suicidal thoughts, terminal diagnosis and trauma.
No two people are the same, using an Integrative approach allows me to draw on my experience of Psychodynamic and Person-Centred theory and CBT and Mindfulness techniques to individually tailor your sessions to meet your individual needs. I focus on what you would like to bring to therapy and support you through the changes you would like to make.
My aim is to create a relationship with you based on openness, honesty and trust, where i can help you to explore and make more sense of your difficulties, thoughts and feelings.
I feel passionately about helping you strengthen your own ability to identify and implement solutions that are right for you so that you feel empowered, enabling you to draw on your inner resources, resulting in you no longer needing me.

I decided to train as a therapist because many years ago i personally suffered and found parts of my life difficult to manage. I experienced a traumatic loss which left me feeling very sad. I became confused, feeling very low, not being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The support i received through having counselling and the personal growth i experienced was priceless. It enabled me to heal.
I learnt that it was okay not to be okay, that grieving is part of a healing process and rather than denying myself of what i needed i was able to fulfill my needs. I learnt things about myself that i never knew existed and i began to understand how my early life experiences had shaped me into the person i had become and how at times it restricted me. Counselling empowered me to become the person i wanted to be, it enabled me to appreciate that things can happen that are outside of my control. Nothing in life is permanent, not the good or the bad and that nobody is perfect. We all experience difficult times and we are all fallible.
How we are able to look after ourselves, manage our needs, understand and express our emotions are the factors that determine how we move forward on our journey to living our best life.
In exploring my own turmoil i was given the opportunity to process my unpleasant feelings and understand them in such a way that they stopped having a major impact on my wellbeing. I became passionate in wanting to provide others with the same experience, and help in their times of need.
I wanted to be able to provide a safe place for others to explore their difficulties, take care of themselves and make sense of their feelings, empowering them to grow, heal and become who they want to be, so i became a wounded healer.

I am approachable, supportive, sensitive and compassionate. You can trust that i will not judge you. I am empathic and will value you as a unique individual. I will accept you exactly as you are, focusing on you and your needs. My aim is to build an equal and trusting relationship with you which enables you to feel at ease in sharing your difficulties and feelings, whether they are current or historic; often there is an overlap between the two.
My journey has led me to have a particular interest in how early life experiences shape our personality and continue to influence the adult self.
hI believe that we all have two sides to us; the good, the bad; the past, the future, and that by embracing both we can begin to accept ourselves as a whole. Empowering us to make the changes we feel necessary to live a happy life in the present.
It is okay to ask for help. Seeking professional help can often feel like a weakness but it takes courage to embark on a journey of self-reflection which can feel rewarding and leave you feeling empowered. I believe that you as an individual have the ability to decide what is best for you and by exploring your thoughts, feelings, emotions and experiences in a space just for you, without feeling judged and with the support of an empathic listener you can gain a better understanding of them, providing you with clarity and the tools you need to make long- term positive changes. I am here to help you facilitate that change, enabling you to move forward on your journey.
An initial assessment is a chance for us to meet and identify your needs to see how best I can help you, it also gives you the opportunity to see if i am the right therapist for you, asking any questions you feel you need in order to make an informed decision about entering into a therapeutic relationship with myself.
Research has shown the most important aspect that enables positive outcome in therapy is the relationship between you and the therapist, rather than a specific technique or theory. So, finding the right therapist for you is essential.
Sessions will be client led and individually tailored using different theoretical approaches to meet your unique individual needs. Sessions will take place in my lovely private, relaxing and comfortable room lasting for 50 minutes either weekly or fortnightly depending on what feels right for you. We will review sessions regularly to see how you feel progression is being made. During the process of therapy you will be in control of your sessions, we will work at a pace that feels right for you. It can feel painful and confusing at times and may feel uncomfortable and bring feelings of anger or sadness. I have no expectations of you to talk about anything that may feel too painful until the time is right for you.
